However you arrive, El Nido's island days start from the bangkas moored in Bacuit Bay.

There are three main ways to get to El Nido:

  1. Fly directly to Lio Airport (ENI);
  2. Fly to Puerto Princesa and travel north by road;
  3. Travel south from Coron by ferry, by plane or on an island-hopping expedition.

Pick the one that matches where your Philippines trip begins. If you are coming from Coron and have three days to spare, the expedition turns the transfer into part of the holiday. Check its available dates before you book flights around it.

Tours to Book Once You Arrive

Most travellers book a boat day soon after landing: Big Lagoon on Tour A, Hidden Beach on Tour C, or Kayangan Lake in Coron. These are the current top-rated tours:

Does El Nido Have an Airport?

Yes. Lio Airport (ENI) is a short drive north of El Nido town.

Where a direct flight fits your itinerary, it is by far the easiest way to arrive.

Important 2026 Flight Change

Older guides often tell travellers to fly directly from Manila NAIA to El Nido.

The current route list for Lio Airport no longer includes Manila. Cebgo is the only airline listed, flying to El Nido from Clark, Cebu, Busuanga (for Coron), Caticlan (for Boracay) and Tagbilaran (for Bohol), according to Wikipedia’s El Nido Airport page.

That means travellers arriving at NAIA who want a direct flight need a road transfer to Clark International Airport (CRK) first.

NAIA and Clark are separate airports, a long drive apart.

What Happened to AirSWIFT?

AirSWIFT, the airline that long served El Nido, was absorbed into Cebgo in June 2026. Flights now run under Cebgo’s DG code instead of AirSWIFT’s T6.

Cebgo links El Nido with Clark, Cebu, Coron, Boracay and Bohol. Check the airline’s current schedule before you plan around a specific route.

Clark to El Nido

If you can reach Clark easily, a direct flight to Lio is the simplest route.

The catch is for passengers who land internationally at NAIA and self-connect to Clark.

Allow plenty of time for:

  • immigration;
  • baggage collection;
  • Manila-area traffic;
  • the road transfer;
  • check-in.

Manila to El Nido

You have two main options.

Manila/NAIA → Clark → El Nido

Best if you want to avoid the long road transfer from Puerto Princesa.

Manila → Puerto Princesa → El Nido by road

Best if flight times or fares are much better through Puerto Princesa.

Compare the whole journey, including transfers and waiting time.

Cebu to El Nido

Cebu is one of the easiest gateways, because a direct flight to Lio avoids both the Manila airport transfer and the Puerto Princesa road journey.

A good itinerary is:

Cebu → El Nido → Coron.

Puerto Princesa to El Nido

The classic alternative is to fly into Puerto Princesa International Airport and continue north by road.

Options include:

  • shared van;
  • public bus;
  • private transfer.

Plan on roughly 5–6 hours, and longer with stops and traffic.

Shared Van

The standard option for many budget and mid-range travellers.

Advantages:

  • frequent departures;
  • relatively fast;
  • airport pickups often available.

Disadvantages:

  • limited space;
  • can feel cramped;
  • several stops on the way.

Bus

Usually slower than the van, with more room.

Take the bus if comfort matters more to you than saving an hour.

Private Transfer

A good choice for families and groups.

You decide:

  • the pickup time;
  • bathroom stops;
  • food stops;
  • the hotel drop-off.

On Viator, Private Transportation between Puerto Princesa and El Nido costs from $203 per van for up to 10 people, takes five to six hours and rates 4.3/5 from 39 reviews. The price is per van, so it gets cheaper per person the more of you share it.

Should You Stay in Puerto Princesa?

Only if it suits your itinerary.

Spend a night if your flight lands late, you want to see the Underground River or you would rather not face a five-hour drive straight after a flight.

Otherwise, carrying straight on north saves a hotel change.

Port Barton to El Nido

A popular slower Palawan route is:

Puerto Princesa → Port Barton → El Nido.

Consider it if you have a longer trip and like smaller beach towns.

San Vicente to El Nido

You can get there by road, but connections are thinner than from Puerto Princesa. Use San Vicente only when it already fits your itinerary; it looks closer on the map than it is in travel time.

Coron to El Nido by Ferry

The direct ferry is one of the easiest ways to reach El Nido from Coron.

Scheduled crossings take about four hours, longer in rough seas. Our El Nido to Coron boat trip guide covers the operators, the ports and what to expect on board.

The ferry is convenient because it links the two towns directly, with no airport transfers.

Coron to El Nido by Plane

Cebgo flies between Busuanga (the airport for Coron) and Lio. The flight is faster than the ferry, but you still need airport transfers at both ends.

The ferry is often simpler door-to-door.

Coron to El Nido by Expedition

The most interesting option if you have time.

You spend the days island hopping through remote northern Palawan, sleeping at beach camps, before arriving in El Nido. The Coron to El Nido: 3-Day 2-Night Island-Hopping Expedition (from $323, 4.8/5 from more than 160 reviews) includes the boat, two nights’ camp or guesthouse accommodation, meals from lunch on day 1 to lunch on day 3, and park fees. It runs the same route as our featured El Nido to Coron expedition, in reverse. A few local operators sell longer camping trips direct, but GetYourGuide currently lists the three-day trip only.

Choose it if you want:

  • snorkeling;
  • beaches;
  • island camps;
  • rustic travel;
  • the journey itself to be part of the holiday.

Our El Nido to Coron expedition guide explains the camps and the route day by day.

Ferry vs Expedition

Take the ferry if you want to arrive the same day.

Take the expedition if you want three days of islands on the way.

Cheapest Way to Get to El Nido

From Puerto Princesa, the bus or a shared van is usually cheapest.

From anywhere else, airfares vary too much for one fixed answer.

Fastest Way

Where available, a direct flight into Lio Airport is fastest.

Best Way for Families

A direct flight to Lio if the budget allows.

Second choice: fly to Puerto Princesa and book a private transfer.

Best Way for Backpackers

A shared van or bus from Puerto Princesa, or the ferry from Coron.

How Long Should You Stay?

Try to allow at least four nights, for:

  • Tour A (from $25, 4.4/5 from more than 1,990 reviews);
  • Tour C (from $30, 4.4/5 from more than 790 reviews);
  • a mainland beach day;
  • a spare day in case weather cancels a boat.

Our guide to the best things to do in El Nido covers the tours, beaches and lagoons, including Small Lagoon.

Best Palawan Route

A classic route is:

Puerto Princesa → El Nido → Coron.

If Puerto Princesa does not interest you, a simpler alternative is:

Clark/Cebu → El Nido → Coron.

For the onward leg, see our guide on how to get from El Nido to Coron.

Do Not Book Tight Connections

Avoid:

  • ferry → immediate flight;
  • international arrival → tight Clark self-connection;
  • wet-season ferry immediately before a long-haul flight.

A spare night costs less than a missed connection.

Final Verdict
