El Nido vs Coron: The Short Answer

If you have to choose one: go to El Nido if you prioritise lagoon scenery, snorkelling and reef diving, Coron if you prefer clear limestone lakes, wreck diving, and a quieter atmosphere. If you have four or more days, take the El Nido to Coron expedition — it covers both and the journey itself is the experience.

El Nido: Lagoons, Cliffs, and Island Hopping

El Nido is the more famous of the two. Its four organised island-hopping routes (Tours A through D) visit different combinations of Bacuit Bay’s 45 islands, each with a distinct character:

• Tour A (most popular): Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Shimizu Island. This is the “classic” El Nido tour and the one most often seen on Instagram — towering limestone cliffs, translucent green-blue water, and beaches you access through sea caves.
• Tour B: Cathedral Cave, Cudugnon Cave, Pinasil Island. More cave-focused; slightly less crowded.
• Tour C: Hidden Beach, Secret Beach, Matinloc Shrine. Beautiful but more spread out.
• Tour D: Star Beach, Helicopter Island, Tapiutan Island. The least popular and often the most peaceful.

The challenge with El Nido is its popularity. During peak season, the Big and Small Lagoons can feel crowded, with dozens of boats and swimming areas cordoned off. Early morning departures (7–8am) beat the rush; later boats (9:30am) arrive at the peak.

Coron: Limestone Lakes, Wrecks, and Silence

Coron is harder to reach (no direct flights from Manila as of 2026 — most travelers fly to Busuanga from Clark or Cebu, or transit through El Nido or Puerto Princesa), which filters its visitor profile toward those with more time and intention. The result: a quieter, more adventurous destination.

Kayangan Lake is Coron’s signature sight — a brackish lake cradled in limestone karst, not a volcanic crater, with lighter freshwater layered over denser seawater and vertical limestone walls on every side. The view from the top of the staircase before descending to the lake is one of the Philippines’ most reproduced photographs.

Twin Lagoon combines fresh and saltwater in two connected chambers, navigable by kayak or swimming through a low rock arch at low tide.

WWII wrecks: In September 1944, American aircraft sank a fleet of Japanese vessels in Coron Bay. Around a dozen major wrecks now lie between roughly 10 and 45 metres, with most dives between about 15 and 35 metres, encrusted with coral and abundant in marine life. The shallow Skeleton Wreck and Lusong Gunboat can be seen with a mask and snorkel; certified scuba divers have a different experience entirely (see our Coron scuba diving guide).

Who Should Take the El Nido to Coron Expedition?

The three-day crossing is designed for travelers who:

• Have at least four nights allocated to Palawan
• Want to see both destinations without flying between them
• Are comfortable sleeping on a boat or at a basic beach camp for one or two nights
• Are willing to spend a day on open water (3–5 hours depending on conditions)

It’s not for those who need hotel comforts or have significant seasickness concerns on open water. If that’s you, flying El Nido–Busuanga and doing each destination separately is the better option.

The Journey as the Destination

The crossing between the two archipelagos is not merely a transfer — it passes through areas of the Sulu Sea that see almost no tourists. The second day of the expedition typically covers Linapacan Island and the Calamian passage, where small fishing communities and undeveloped beaches make up the landscape. This stretch is the most remote part of the trip and, for many travelers, the most memorable.
