When to Visit El Nido and Coron

Northern Palawan — which covers both El Nido and Coron — has a clearly defined dry and wet season driven by the Philippine monsoon system. The dry season runs from mid-November through April, when the northeast monsoon (Amihan) brings reliable sunshine, calm seas, and excellent underwater visibility. This is the prime window for the El Nido to Coron island-hopping expedition.

Month by Month

November – January (Peak Season) Conditions are outstanding: calm seas, blue skies, and the clearest water of the year. Underwater visibility in Coron’s lagoons reaches 20–30 metres during this period — ideal for the WWII shipwrecks and coral gardens. Book accommodation and expeditions at least 4–6 weeks in advance in December and January.

February – March (Optimal) Often the single best months to visit. Crowds thin slightly after the holiday rush while conditions remain perfect. Seas are typically flat, making the bangka crossing comfortable even for those prone to seasickness. Prices are mid-range between the holiday peak and shoulder season.

April (Late Dry Season) Still good conditions but visibly warming. Some operators begin to see slightly rougher afternoon seas toward late April. A solid choice if you’re flexible on dates.

May – June (Shoulder/Transition) The southwest monsoon (Habagat) begins to build. Seas become choppier and some multi-day expeditions are suspended by operators who prioritise passenger safety. Day tours within protected bays still run regularly. Prices drop significantly.

July – October (Wet Season) This is the heart of the southwest monsoon. The El Nido to Coron crossing becomes unreliable — many operators suspend the route entirely during sustained weather systems. El Nido itself can receive heavy rainfall. If you visit during this period, budget extra days for weather delays and focus on activities within the protected lagoons.

The Expedition-Specific Window

For the El Nido to Coron 3-day crossing specifically, the reliable booking window is December through March. The open-sea segment between the Bacuit Archipelago and the Calamian group requires calm conditions; choppy swells make the crossing uncomfortable and occasionally unsafe in a traditional bangka.

Experienced travellers who don’t mind rougher conditions sometimes visit in October and November, catching the very end of the wet season as it transitions — but this comes with a real risk of weather cancellations.

Booking in Advance

The combination of limited daily departures and high peak-season demand means the three-day expedition sells out weeks ahead during December and January. If your travel dates fall in this window, book at minimum 3–4 weeks ahead. February and March allow slightly more flexibility with 1–2 weeks’ notice usually sufficient.
